Hunt for Red October: Replica Orders

Retouched HD screencaps:

Appears to be two sheets, double-spaced, stapled together in the upper left hand corner.

I’ve recreated this in two sheet sizes: US Letter, and Metric A4:

A4  •  US Letter with A4 Proportions

Not dead accurate, but close, given the reference material. The US Letter with A4 Proportions has trim lines on the edges.

Red October Sail Number Shirts

As seen on the Red October when she is leaving Polijarny. Now available on an attractive variety of shirts, though I recommend a black or dark, drab, socialist gray:

“Cold, and hard…” Like a submarine should be!

Shirts Added to TeePublic, Still on Sale!

You have 6.5 hours of $14 tees left. I have added approximately two dozen shirts to my TeePublic store:

Many of these are brand new to anywhere, so please take a look.

The Hunt for Red October: Soviet Ambassador’s Lapel Pin

The Soviet Ambassador Lysenko (excellently played by Joss Ackland) is wearing a red, flag-shaped lapel pin. The President’s National Security Advisor Mr. Pelt (also excellently portrayed by Richard Jordan) is likewise wearing a US flag lapel pin.

However, the ambassador’s pin is not a simple Soviet Union national flag. Upon closer inspection, it appears to be emblazoned with the text “ВЕРХОВНЫЙ СОВЕТ СССР,” “Supreme Soviet of the USSR.” This was the most powerful legislative body in the Soviet Union.

Similar (almost certainly replica) pins can be found for about $15 on Ali Baba, or for ludicrously high prices on eBay.

The Hunt for Red October: Ryan’s Tactics Book Replica

As seen in Ryan’s briefcase while he’s packing in the opening credits:

“I’m not an agent, I just write books for the CIA.”

Identified the fonts, set the type, estimated the size of the book from a scan, and recreated the wonky graphic of the hammer & sickle. Find a donor book, about 256 pages thick, about 6.25 x 9.25 inches, or make a dummy. Trim along the trim lines, or leave the left side untrimmed to wrap around the spine and back. Print on glossy or semi-gloss white or very light tan heavy paper.

Tactics Cover Replica

“I know this book…”

The Hunt for Red October: Officers’ Parade Caps

I’d never noticed these until my latest viewing. The senior officers have ‘parade caps’ which they almost never wear. Here we can see Dr. Petrov wearing his during the evacuation after the ‘reactor accident:’

And here are Borodin and Ramius with theirs, which appear identical with the exception of additional gold wreaths on the bill:

Note that these appear to be using the same badge as the ushankas, and the buttons holding the braid appear to be the same as the smaller Soviet naval buttons.

Red October: Ryan’s Soviet Tactics Book

Seen very briefly inside Jack Ryan’s briefcase as he is packing in the opening credits is this small paperback book titled “Tactics” and subtitled “A Soviet View.”

shot0002 retouched

This is a real book, and was edited by V. G. Reznichenko, published in Moscow in 1984 (as “Taktika”), and translated and republished by the USAF in 1987 (printed by the GPO?), apparently with the approval of the Soviet Union.

This was apparently intended for officers of the Soviet Army and military academy students.

Ironically, since this was printed in 1987, Ryan couldn’t have had a copy in 1984.

The Hunt for Red October: Soviet Officers’ White Dress Shirts

Our best look at the details of the officers’ shirts come from Vasili’s / Sam Neill’s death scene:

Dress Shirt

From this we can see that they are white dress shirts with white buttons and a Nehru / Mandarin collar.

Also note that the officers’ uniform jackets / tunics have a white ‘false collar’ inside the real collar.

The Hunt for Red October: Captain Ramius’ Ribbons

OK, I’ve had this done for a while, but I’m only about half-way through acquiring my own ribbons. I thought I’d throw this out there while there was still time for any of you who might be making your own Ramius costumes to find & buy the ribbons.

I started with this old auction photo, which, as far as I can tell is a match to Ramius’ uniform:

For Sale: Red October Sail Markings Shirts (and Buttons)!

Based on my meticulous replica of the Red October’s sail number and markings.

Not cold and hard, but soft and comfortable, comrade captain!

Will there be other products in the future? Well, I probably can’t slap the English titlecard art up there. I’m not totally confidant in my Russian translation of “Red October” either, as Google translate gives me two slightly different wordings :(

HOWEVER, if you wish me to add the faux anechoic tile pattern to the white text, just ask :)
