Today is the birthday of one of my favorite actors: Sam Neill!

Perhaps most famous for portraying Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park (and JP III), but also beloved for The Hunt for Red October, In The Mouth of Madness, Alcatraz, Event Horizon, The Omen III, Daybreakers, Memoirs of an Invisible Man, The Dish, Bicentennial Man, etc, etc!

Hunt for Red October: Replica Orders

Retouched HD screencaps:

Appears to be two sheets, double-spaced, stapled together in the upper left hand corner.

I’ve recreated this in two sheet sizes: US Letter, and Metric A4:

A4  •  US Letter with A4 Proportions

Not dead accurate, but close, given the reference material. The US Letter with A4 Proportions has trim lines on the edges.

The Hunt for Red October: Jack Ryan’s “Proceedings” Magazine

Also inside Ryan’s briefcase, we can see what appears to be a journal or magazine of some sort, titled “Proceedings” with a photo of a submarine on the cover:

This is a real magazine. It is the Proceedings of the US Naval Institute, October 1987 issue:

Proceedings Magazione October 1987

And if the US Naval Institute sounds familiar to you, maybe you’ve heard of another of their publications…

The Hunt for Red October: Soviet Ambassador’s Lapel Pin

Posted in Physical Object with tags , , , , , on November 1, 2015 by Staff Writer

The Soviet Ambassador Lysenko (excellently played by Joss Ackland) is wearing a red, flag-shaped lapel pin. The President’s National Security Advisor Mr. Pelt (also excellently portrayed by Richard Jordan) is likewise wearing a US flag lapel pin.

However, the ambassador’s pin is not a simple Soviet Union national flag. Upon closer inspection, it appears to be emblazoned with the text “ВЕРХОВНЫЙ СОВЕТ СССР,” “Supreme Soviet of the USSR.” This was the most powerful legislative body in the Soviet Union.

Similar (almost certainly replica) pins can be found for about $15 on Ali Baba, or for ludicrously high prices on eBay.

The Hunt for Red October: Ryan’s Tactics Book Replica

As seen in Ryan’s briefcase while he’s packing in the opening credits:

“I’m not an agent, I just write books for the CIA.”

Identified the fonts, set the type, estimated the size of the book from a scan, and recreated the wonky graphic of the hammer & sickle. Find a donor book, about 256 pages thick, about 6.25 x 9.25 inches, or make a dummy. Trim along the trim lines, or leave the left side untrimmed to wrap around the spine and back. Print on glossy or semi-gloss white or very light tan heavy paper.
